Fruit & Nut Village is a charitable organisation based in Birmingham (UK). Fruit & Nut Village is involved in planting and caring for orchards and other perennial food spaces such as “Forest Gardens”. We established in 2021 as a charity, but we’ve worked in Stirchley since 2018. The neighbourhood of Stirchley was chosen as the initial Fruit & Nut Village because a number of orchards already existed in this area, and there was a base of active volunteers.
The main purpose of Fruit & Nut Village is to bring people together to develop individual growing spaces into a collection of connected food-abundant spaces, by working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. Working with the local community is really important to us - we run volunteer events regularly, with sometimes more than 50 people attending; usually numbers are around 10-20. Local people come together to learn and work with each other, often weeding, planting, mulching and pruning trees, creating new growing spaces and watering fruit trees.
We manage over 70-80 growing spaces in total, across Stirchley, Balsall Heath, Druids Heath, Lozells, and Billesley. So, you’re never too far away from your nearest orchard or forest garden if you live in or visit one of these neighbourhoods.
