Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage almost 100 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

We've been #EdiblePerennial plant propagating this week with @warstockcommunity_centre. Smiling happy faces - the power of plants!

Loads of activity at #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath the past few days, including welcome the @volunteering_bcu team back, and they worked incredibly hard.

We'll be here all summer - our sessions are #OpenToAll and we'd love to see you there. Reaside sessions run every Wednesday, as well as some special Saturday ones for those who can't make it during the weekdays.

#ForestGarden planting workshop on Monday morning for a special #StartTheWeek session, at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley.

It felt like the Summer had arrived already with the beautiful weather we had. Lots of newly planted #EdiblePerennials in the garden for the community to enjoy. Join us next week for weeding, watering and path maintenance!

Rob has delivered a presentation this afternoon to @municipaltreeofficers at their Annual General Meeting, where he discussed the development of Fruit & Nut Village and our connections to local authority and partner organisations. There was also a delicious lunch!

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

Cath @gingercathleen Palgrave is our Stirchley Area Assistant. She has had many jobs, including campaigning, teaching, recycling at festivals, forest school leading, and scientific research. She found out about Fruit & Nut Village by cycling past one of the sites on her way to work, deciding then to swap teaching for urban orchards; she graduated in @theorchardproject’s Certificate in Community Orchards course, and is now engaged on their Orchard Consultant program.

As well as leading sessions for FNV, Cath works at @highburyorchard where she delivers children’s sessions. She is also a bicycle mechanic and shows people how to maintain their bikes, building confidence in cycling through her new business @cognationcic. As well as looking after trees, she very much enjoys the fruits of her labour, being a connoisseur of fine cider!

Harvest Green: A New Orchard for Stirchley! 💚

We had a fantastic few hours with @reavalleystirchley today, planting several new fruit trees to create a new #orchard on Harvest Close, off Fordhouse Lane, we have dubbed Harvest Green Orchard, next to the River Rea in #Stirchley.

Our groups and #volunteers came together seamlessly, working as a spectacular amalgamated team and well-oiled machine (thanks to break time coffee and samosas), clearing, digging, planting, post-driving, caging, tying, mulching, and watering the beautiful young trees.

Thank you to everyone who came to lend a hand today, we couldn't have done it without you! 🌳

Reintroducing Fruit & Nut Village!

For those who are new to all things #fruity & #nutty, here are the who, what, where, when, and why of Fruit & Nut Village.

As we steadily approach the management of 100 growing spaces in #Birmingham, we have been reflecting on our origins - or, more appropriately, our 'roots' - ensuring our small charity continues to grow upwards towards the light.

We are grateful to have such a sublime network of #volunteers, helping us tend to and care for the orchards, forest gardens, and other perennial growing sites we have in Stirchley, Balsall Heath, Druids Heath, Billesley, Lozells, and beyond.

16 volunteers keeping busy at #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley for our #StartTheWeek session, and still we have much to do!

The winter is well and truly over at #PebbleMill #ForestGarden in #Stirchley. We've been trying our hardest to catch up on the growth of grass in our beds now the #Spring has arrived. Join us next Saturday for another session at this special growing space; there is much to do!

Around 8 months ago we were #BudGrafting at #BullfinchForestGarden in #Stirchley.

Yesterday, we untaped our grafts, and we were rewarded with seeing that many had successfully taken!

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

Charlotte @charley_mwc McDermott is our Communications & Funding Officer. She has worked with non-profit organisations - in the community, environment, and arts sectors - for several years, with previous experience with groups such as The International Society of Arboriculture, Birmingham TreePeople and Calthorpe Residents Society. She is also the Office Manager for @municipaltreeofficers, volunteers for the CAVAT Group, a part of @accessabilityarts, and runs @sandwellpoetslaureate.

Charley holds a Masters in Writing, and when she isn't constructing our bulletins and posters, updating our website and social media, writing press releases and funding applications, she also spends her time writing poetry and performing around the West Midlands and beyond. She attends a few sessions each month, learning new skills, helping with tree planting and pruning workshops, and hosting Summer Solstice and Wassail events.

The plants stole the show at #KingdomForestGarden this #EasterMonday.

Great weather and great company, and the emerging life looks stunning. Have you visited this growing space yet? If not, now is a great time to do so, now that Spring is arriving.

Join us for some planting with our partners at city farm to grow the village! Equipment provided and session open to all.
