Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage almost 100 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

Interfaith Picnic in Calthorpe Interfaith Community Orchard

More than 60 people came to Calthorpe Park on Sunday 14th June for a relaxed springtime picnic, held among the young fruit trees of the Interfaith Orchard. The event brought neighbours together shortly after the festivals of Shavuot, Eid ul‑Adha, and Pentecost, creating a moment of shared celebration across traditions.

Families, elders, and children joined the festivities. Those attending included Muslims, Jews, Christians, Quakers, people of no religious affiliation, and fifteen asylum seekers and refugees connected with @the_travellers_tree and the @journey.lgbt asylum seekers’ group.

The orchard itself has grown from a series of interfaith planting days over the past few years, each one marking Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish festival honouring trees. Twenty fruit trees now form the heart of the space, many of them beginning to bear their first crops.

At the picnic, Rabbi Lisa Barrett of Birmingham Progressive Synagogue reflected on the Jewish call to welcome the stranger with what she described as radical hospitality. Rabiyah Latif from @nearneighbours offered an Islamic perspective on the restorative power of spending time in nature and the importance of meeting one another across difference.

Food - from samosas to pizza to Shavuot cheesecake - was shared generously, supported by funding from the Big Lunch. Conversations unfolded easily between long‑standing partners and first‑time visitors, strengthening relationships between individuals and community organisations.

One Muslim attendee later described the afternoon as “restorative and energising, surrounded by such inspiring and kind people”.

Mandy Ross, part of the organising team from the BPS Tikkun Olam social action group, said: “At a time when many communities feel wary or disconnected, it was uplifting to be building bridges in our city - welcoming one another, reaching across our differences, and discovering how many people want to connect. We’re grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.”

We visit #KingdomForestGarden to #StartTheWeek every Monday morning in #Stirchley! This week was no different, and we had a great few hours weeding, edging, and keeping the green space in great condition for the public to enjoy.

Meeting the Fruit & Nut Village Team!

@danburwould joined Fruit & Nut Village in June 2022 as the first Balsall Heath area manager. He's a long time local resident, and brings years of community arts and teaching experience to his role, which now includes that of @friends_earth Postcode Gardener. He completed a Permaculture Design Certificate in 2007, and is working towards a Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design.

Alongside FNV work, he's a photographer, a trustee of @oldprintworksbrum, and has a young family. He says, "I got into this work through the hopeful magic of grafting fruit trees. I'm very proud of what we've achieved locally, especially at Reaside Forest Garden, and with our partners at Apna Ghar, @saheli_hub and @retrofitbalsallheath."

It's Great Big Green Week!

Here are our events celebrating all things green until the 14th June:

Wednesday 10th June – 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm @ The People's Plot. Forest Garden Care Session. We are back this June for more pleasant evenings of weeding, watering and general care of the forest garden, the site and its infrastructure. Please do join us. Thursday 11th June – 10 am to 12 pm @ The Green Forest Garden. Forest Garden Care Session. All welcome as we prepare ground for more planting and continue weeding and mulching around our trees!

Friday 12th June – 10.30 am to 2.30 pm @ Pebble Mill Forest Garden. Forest Garden Care Session. We have a team of office workers joining us today to boost our numbers and to really make a big effort to clear the weeds from the forest garden - prepare for a big session of garden care. Open To All.

Sunday 14th June – 10 am to 12 pm @ The Green Forest Garden. Forest Garden Planting Workshop. Join us for a special Sunday session planting fruit bushes to develop this space. If you can't usually attend weekday sessions, then this one's for you! All welcome.

Sunday 14th June – 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm @ Calthorpe Interfaith Community Orchard. Interfaith Orchard Spring Picnic. Join us for shared food, games and perhaps some light pruning and mulching!

Having a lovely morning with @hhcc.hallgreen in the #ForestGarden! The sun has been shining through the threatening clouds, but no rain as of yet, whilst we've been weeding around the garden plot to let out edible perennials and trees breathe again. Plenty of plants to go into the green space too, where this little gem will continue to thrive.

An amazing turn out at #PebbleMill #ForestGarden in #SellyParkSouth last week. Thank you to @uobconservation for your support. There were 26 of us weeding, tidying up edge, flipping compost, planting, and more. What a lovely feeling, and there was no rain! Back on Friday for more.

We spent some time last week caring for #PennyacreOrchards in #DruidsHeath with our lovely volunteers, clearing around the bases of our fruit trees across our three orchards.

Tidying up #HazelwellRiverbankOrchard in #Stirchley and giving it a good prune this week!

We carried out our #StoneFruitPruning this week at #BroadmeadowOrchard, and we'll be running more #FruitTreePruning in #Stirchley all month if you'd like to join us.

We've been back to #ImmanuelChurch in #HightersHeath this week to care for the #ForagingHedge in our #FruitAndNutVillage #DruidsHeath! We had a great team of volunteers with us, as you can see! Many little hands make light work.

Fruit & Nut Village now manage over 100 growing spaces in our Birmingham Villages!

Across Stirchley, Balsall Heath, Druids Heath, Billesley, and beyond we have worked with almost the same amount of partners during our time as a charity, building bridges and relationships across Birmingham.

We wouldn’t be managing this many growing spaces without our valuable partners (who many of these sites belong to, inviting us into their green spaces), funders (who have made all our work possible to begin with), and of course our dedicated volunteers (who show up every week and work incredibly hard learning and honing their skills), and we want to thank each and every one of you for helping us get to this point.

We had a lovely session in the sunshine at #SouthernDriveForestGarden in #Monyhull last week, and we're back here on 18th and 25th June if you'd like to visit this fantastic growing space.

We've been developing our growing space and friendship at Apna Ghar Forest Garden this week with wonderful people in #BalsallHeath.
