Who We Are

Fruit & Nut Village CIO is a charity based in Birmingham, growing orchards and perennial food spaces, and working with local communities to develop a range of edible landscapes. We manage almost 100 growing spaces in total, across Balsall Heath, Druids Heath and Stirchley, but are also currently expanding into Lozells and Billesley.

Thank you @retrofitbalsallheath for including us and some our #FruitTrees at last week's #Iftar at #BalsallHeathChurchCentre in #BalsallHeath. It was such a feel-good, community event, bringing people together from all faiths and backgrounds for special evening together.

Look at this beautifully grafted #PearTree in #BalsallHeath! Hopefully this will grow into a thriving tree.

Planting #FruitTrees at #ReasideForestGarden in #BalsallHeath. We run sessions here almost every Wednesday! If you haven't visited yet, it's certainly worth your time.

Plenty of fun at #BeilbyRoadOrchard in #Stirchley with our lovely volunteers, #pruning and #caring for the #orchard for the community to enjoy! We have quite a few pruning and grafting workshops this month if you'd like to join us.

Lots of different tasks to complete at #ThePeoplesPlot at @dadslanedigs last week. Pruning #EspalierPears, #Blackcurrants, relaying a shelter floor, tool store weatherproofing, bed relocation... and #MaryWasingtinAsparagus planting! We had a lovely, busy morning with our inspiring volunteers.

Planting fruit trees in #CalthorpePark in #BalsallHeath #orchards last with the wonderful volunteers from @volunteering_bcu! We had a great time and the students receive certificates from @mybcu to add to their portfolios.

Winter Pruning & Orchard Care Workshop

All welcome for a pruning and care workshop with @tawsociety! Come along, learn new skills and meet new people. All equipment and refreshments provided.

We had lots of fun pruning some #SoftFruit last week at #PebbleMill #PlayingFields #ForestGarden, including #Jostaberries and #Gooseberries.

The National Lottery Open Week: 7th – 15th March. All sessions with these dates are dedicated to celebrating the Open Week and our funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

Sunday 8th March – 10 am to 1 pm @ Beilby Road Soft Fruit Garden. Bush Planting Session. Join us today to expand the soft fruit area we began last March, at the corner of the orchard here. University of Birmingham Conservation Volunteers will be joining us for the session - please come along for some planting fun.

Monday 9th March – 9 am to 12 pm @ Kingdom Forest Garden. Start The Week Session. We continue to develop the site, keep paths tidy and weed where necessary. The plants are now bursting into life and it's going to be a busy Spring.

Tuesday 10th March – 10 am to 12 pm @ Base Camp Orchard. Winter Pruning Workshop. All welcome to this workshop where we'll prune the trees in this beautiful orchard. Learn new skills and meet new people!

Wednesday 11th March – 10 am to 12.30 pm @ Reaside Forest Garden. Maintenance Session. An open to all session that we run regularly. Winter work may include tree planting and there will always be a chance to share a hot drink together and perhaps a meal.

Thursday 12th March – 9.30 am to 12 pm @ Hazelwell Riverbank Orchard. Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop. Another chance to learn some basic fruit tree pruning techniques... this session replaces the one we had scheduled in January that was rained off.

Saturday 14th March – 10 am to 1 pm @ Reaside Forest Garden. Soft Fruit Planting Session. Join us and Moseley for Ukraine for a special soft fruit planting workshop at our beautiful Reaside Forest Garden!

Saturday 14th March – 10 am to 2 pm @ Pebble Mill Forest Garden. Seating Installation Workshop. Finally, the day has come to construct some seating for this beautiful forest garden. Our efforts will we thanked for years to come. Please come along to help, especially if you're a bit "handy".

Reaside Forest Garden Winter Workshops! #March 2026

Join us at this incredible growing space in #BalsallHeath for our regular #winter #maintenance on Wednesday mornings, #planting, #mulching, #observing...

All sessions this month are from 10 am to 12.30 pm, on the 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th of February.

There is also a special extra session here during The National Lottery Open Week, Saturday 14th, 10 am to 1 pm, soft fruit planting with @moseleyforukraine!

The Tipping Point event at @bbgardens on 12-15th February 2026 allowed visitors to consider the changing #climate and its possible consequences. The focal point was Tipping Point, an immersive outdoor sound and light installation simulating a #forest #fire. Fruit & Nut Village was one of the local organisations sharing their work through stalls, talks and interactive activities. We were represented by our current Chair, Ewan, and new Board member Mark at this fantastic event, and we want to thank BBG for inviting us and hosting Tipping Point!

We pruned the precious trees in our shared #InterfaithOrchard in #CalthorpePark, #BalsallHeath last weekend, where we also shared a delicious picnic. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

We had a lovely morning yesterday in #DruidsHeath, planting four new trees - walnuts and hazelnuts - into #TheGreen #ForestGarden! The rain didn't deter the solid team, and Laura even provided delicious homemade flapjacks as a reward. Thank you to everyone who came and got covered in mud!

A bit of a buzz in #KingdomForestGarden in #Stirchley last week: we didn't get rained on, the woodpeckers are drilling, a supporter brought us special biscuits, and we were happy to be together in the space.

Planting up a couple of new spaces at #PebbleMill #PlayingFields #ForestGarden in #Stirchley last week, and adding more specimens to the lobes with our photogenic volunteers.

We had our staff meeting last week, where we discussed our operations at Fruit & Nut Village in relation to a thriving tree, from the roots right up to the fruits and nuts!

We also talked about plenty of propagation techniques, ensuring we are teaching our volunteers to the best of our abilities.

We want to thank Apna Ghar for hosting us and making a delicious lunch for us to enjoy.

We have been kindly awarded funding from @westonfdn!

Fruit & Nut Village are incredibly grateful to receive this grant, so we can continue our projects around Birmingham, expanding further as time rolls on. Plenty of sessions, workshops, and events will be elevated thanks to this generous grant. Thank you Garfield Weston for this opportunity, and thank you to our volunteers for helping us #GrowTheVillage.

We've completed the #WinterPruning of the 2nd row at #NewlandsRun in #Stirchley. We'll be back in March to work on the remaining trees!
